Human trafficking happens all around us ... even in beautiful Vancouver. It is our time to do something.
The Truth Isn`t Sexy campaign has hit the streets of Vancouver ( look for posters at various skytrain stations ) and ads throughout local restaurants and gyms.
There are an estimated 27 million slaves worldwide. Currently, only 1 - 2% of victims are rescued. You can help by continuing to inform yourself of what is happening. Together we can turn victims into survivors.
Another piece from The Truth Isn't Sexy campaign ... look for this in restaurants and gyms around Vancouver on their digital boards.
Did you know? There are an estimated 27 million slaves world wide. 250,000 exist in North America alone. Many of them in Vancouver, British Columbia. 75 - 80% of human trafficking is for sex, followed by forced labour and organ harvesting. 80% of those sold into slavery are under the age of 24. Some as young as 6. Currently, only 1 - 2 % of victims are rescued. YOU can help turn victims into survivors.
Major Brian Venables, Divisional Secretary for Public Relations and Development, shares insight into the new Truth Isn't Sexy ( Freedom ) Campaign with CTV.
Air date: February 3, 2012
The 'i deserve freedom' campaign focuses on the human epidemic of trafficked youth for sexual services. As appalling as these statistics are, it remains relatively unknown that the majority of victims are between 18 and 24. There are also an estimated 1.2 million children under the age of 18 trafficked annually. Slavery or 'forced labour' generates an estimated US$ 31.6 billion in annual global profits.

As our efforts in bringing awareness to the plight of human trafficking takes on momentum, so does the attendance of our annual ‘Hope in the City’ luncheon. Over 450 guests gathered together to dine, share, learn and support our efforts in combating human trafficking.
The predominantly female guests at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre on November 18th represent the elite in philanthropic, community-minded influential Vancouver women who were there to offer support to this largely female global issue: 43% of the enslaved are used for forced commercial sexual exploitation, of whom 98 per cent are women and girls; 32% of victims are used for forced economic exploitation, of whom 56 per cent are women and girls. 95% of these female victims experienced physical or sexual violence in the act of being trafficked or during enslavement.

‘Do Something’ was the theme for the day, and our committee members certainly did just that. We’d like to take this moment to thank our Committee members who helped make this annual event the overwhelming success that it was, raising over $110,000 through corporate support, ticket sales, a silent auction and dynamic live auction.
Our sincerest thanks to Committee Members - Shannon Belkin (Chair), Tina Oliver (Co-Chair), Tali'ah Aquilini, Michele Culter, Mariyam Damji, Angela Dueck, Keirstead Farris, Sharon Ferriss, Angela Grossman, Sofia Joensuu, Connie Leighton, Anne Lippert, Cathy McMahon, Susi Milne, Isabelle Spothelfer.
The Salvation Army’s annual Weekend of Prayer for Victims of Sex Trafficking will take place September 23-24, 2011. Our divisional theme for the weekend is “STAND” because we believe that all of us need to stand for those who are in bondage of sexual slavery, stand with each victim and those who work on the front lines, and stand against the evil that is sex trafficking.
‘But the Lord stands beside me like a great warrior. Before him my persecutors will stumble. They cannot defeat me. They will fail and be thoroughly humiliated. Their dishonor will never be forgotten. …Though I was poor and needy, he rescued me from my oppressors.’ Jeremiah 20: 11, 13b
All are requested to join us in prayer and in intercession for all those who are being trafficked.
The vision is for Christians around the world to fast and to pray sincerely, compassionately and intelligently for victims of sexual trafficking. In years past, Christians have organized prayer and awareness in their workplaces, in their churches and in their communities.
Our hope is that this form of the slave trade will be abolished, that all people involved in human trafficking will find restoration, and that victims will be cared for in body, mind and spirit.
Ideas, prayer resources, and information about the weekend and about human trafficking can be found at: www.salvationist.ca/trafficking
